The first thing you have to know, is that a north facing house and a north facing garden are two very different things!
“North facing” refers to which way your front door faces.
“North Facing Garden” refers to which way your garden at the back of the home faces.
For now, I’ll be talking about garden facing but don’t get them confused in the future!
So, what’s best? There really isn’t a solid answer.
Investor’s will tell you that south facing is the ideal, because your garden will spend all year and all-day bathing in sunlight, but no one tells you that it might not be suitable for everyone.
For example, if you have young children who like to spend all day playing in the garden, a south facing garden without any shade could lead to sun burn in the summer.
However, a South facing is a great place to grow vegetables and plants (if that’s your cup of tea).
Having an east or west facing gardens is overlooked, but the truth is that they still give you long periods of sunlight the only difference is the addition of much-needed shade for those days when it gets too hot!
If you’re an early riser, you could benefit from an East facing garden as the sun would come through your bedroom windows at the back of the house in the early morning.
Contrastingly, if you’re a fan of warm summer evenings then West will be best!
So really, you shouldn’t listen to the investors but listen to how you use your home.
Even a north facing garden, with the day mostly in shade, will have its benefits to someone. (Perhaps a vampire?)
