Everything you need to know about london’s taxi boat
Taking a boat is just as normal as driving if you live in certain areas in London.
Created as an alternate route for commuters, Uber Boats, otherwise known as “Thames Clipper”, are just like any other TFL services. All it takes is to tap your card on and off or book online on the Uber app or their website.
Here are some things you need to be aware of when it comes to using this service.
- You have to board the clipper at specific piers across the Thames. Here’s a map below.
- You don’t need to buy a ticket in advance and you don’t need an Oyster card. Any contactless payment can work meaning you can travel spontaneously across the boats.
- We’d recommend buying an advanced ticket if you’re travelling in large groups to be sure you can all reserve your spaces. Sometimes, particularly on weekends, large groups could get separated if not careful.
- There’s three main lines, the RB1 & RB2 that go Central & East and the RB6 that goes Central & West.
- Make sure you get on the right boat by checking live timetables and listening to staff. It’s very important you pay attention while on the pier as all the boats will stop at the same place meaning it’s easy to get confused.
- The routes extend during peak times! Before 10am and past 5pm you’ll be able to travel further on the clipper but during off peak these places will be closed. Don’t make the mistake of missing them as you’ll have to find an alternate route to get to your destination.
- There’s a small café on the boat. If it’s a busy boat or a short journey, queues might mean you wont have time to enjoy your coffee. On a quiet long trip it’s a great addition.
