5 Ways To Prevent Household Water Damage

We deal with leaks in our client properties often and have come to realise they’re a difficult thing to handle.

Ideally, you want to avoid them at all costs, but how do you do that? What can you do if you have a water leak in an empty property?

As systems age and with the changing of the seasons and temperature, water is bound to have an effect on your property in some way.

Fortunately, it’s possible to protect your systems or find these problems early to avoid larger damage.

Here are 5 things you can do to prevent them ahead of time.

1. Keep the heating on low

Having heating on a low during winter months especially in a vacant property is advised to stop condensation and moisture build up in the walls and reduces the risk of rainwater damage.

2. Keep your windows open slightly.

This is less possible in vacant homes, but if you know your home will be visited regularly and can leave you window open, this step will keep your rooms breathing.

3. Regularly check water system pressure.

If the pressure has dropped it can only drop for one reason and that’s because water has left the system because of a leak. Checking regularly means you’ll be able to know to get it fixed before it’s turns into a larger problem.

For vacant properties, it would be advised to get a home manager like us to make routine visits to your property to check this.

4. Upgrade your system.

Smart systems these days have products that clamp onto your incoming cold main supply, and monitor your system pressure from anywhere in the world.  You’ll know immediately if something’s wrong and will be able to call for back up before the damage worsens.

5. Drain & isolate your water systems

If you’re going to be away from your property for a long period, emptying your system ensures no water damage will occur while you’re away.

Ultimately, it’s something you just have to keep an eye on. It’s one of those things where there’s no real way to avoid it all together but staying on top of the system can make a real difference in reducing damage and stopping larger leaks.
